Deciphering Between a Sleeve Gastrectomy and Gastric Bypass

If obesity affects your quality of life, you can take a few different paths to address the issue and get back to enjoying the activities you love. At Bay Surgery, we are here to assist you with selecting what surgical intervention may be appropriate for your situation and to guide you through the surgery's lead-up and support you after the fact.

Which Option Will Work for You?

Some guidelines are set by the Australian and New Zealand Metabolic and Obesity Surgical Society (ANZMOSS) to help you understand whether weight loss surgery is the correct choice for your situation. When you visit Bay Surgery in Tauranga, our friendly team will be able to help you identify whether you are a likely candidate for Weight Loss Surgery. If you and your medical team decide your obesity is best treated with surgical intervention, we can help you select between a Sleeve Gastrectomy and a Gastric Bypass.

Restriction With a Sleeve Gastrectomy

A Sleeve Gastrectomy is a form of restrictive Weight Loss Surgery; this means the stomach size is limited so that when you eat, you will very quickly become ‘full’. The stomach would generally hold around 1000mls of food, but after your Sleeve Gastrectomy, the capacity would be reduced by approximately 85% - so it would then have a capacity of around 150mls. Our Tauranga medical team at Bay Surgery also find that a Sleeve Gastrectomy may also reduce appetite hormones; you could also find that your body is more capable of handling glucose and fat.

Malabsorption And Your Gastric Bypass

The other approach we offer at Bay Surgery in Tauranga to address obesity is a Gastric Bypass. This method works on principles of malabsorption; this means the surgery will limit the absorption of calories by the intestines. Gastric Bypass works in tandem with a restriction method whereby the surgeon will rearrange the anatomy of the stomach and the bowel in order to both create a smaller stomach and also stop your body from being able to absorb sugar and fat in the same way. The malabsorption works on a reconfiguration of the bowel - so food has less time in the bowel to be absorbed.

Choosing between a Sleeve Gastrectomy and a Gastric Bypass requires information and support, and at Bay Surgery in Tauranga, we are here to provide both. Get in touch today to book some time for a chat about your options.
